'Zebra tarantula' (Aphonopelma seemanni)        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Aphonopelma is a large genus of tarantulas that includes most of the species found in North America north of Mexico, and also extends into South America.  This attractive hand-sized species is from Central America.  The female shown here was a pet; she was quite calm during the 'shoot' but occasionally brushed some hairs from her abdomen when disturbed.   Many tarantulas have urticating hairs that apparently act as deterrents.   I photographed her using a ringflash to minimize stark shadows.
