Eight-spotted skimmer (Libellula forensis)        Images © Mark A. Chappell

This striking dragonfly draws attention from its flashy wing pattern -- highly visible from a distance -- instead of bright colors.   These were patrolling a small pond in the midst of extensive sagebrush and saltbrush flats near Mono Lake, California, and at Bear River Refuge in Utah.
