Autumn oak leaves        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Oaks (these are California black oaks, Quercus kelloggi) are a characteristic component of forests on the western slope of the Sierra and are prominent in Yosemite Valley.   A small grove near the Ahwanee Hotel produced the carpet of leaves on the forest floor with a carpet of leaves in the lower left photo.   I used a wideangle lens to emphasize the nearby leaves while keeping everything in focus, and was fortunate to have an overcast sky to provide even, shadow-free light.   The other images are of leaves still on trees, but ready to fall; all were taken in or near Yosemite Valley.
