Blackbirds are very common thrushes in Europe; they've also been introduced to Australia and New Zealand. Like many thrushes, they are fond of berries, and one of these (above right)-- a male, as indicated by his shiny black plumage -- was eating some autumn fruit. It was quite shy and did not permit close approach. The photowas made near the end of a long hike in the Tatra Mountains in extreme southern Poland. The other images were taken in Bialowieza, in northeastern Poland. The bottom image shows a dark brown female looking for worms and insects in a grassy field. |
