Barrel cacti, Deep Canyon        Images © Mark A. Chappell

These California barrel cacti (Ferocactus cylindraceus) were just beginning to bloom in March 2007, when I was working at Deep Canyon.   I was especially intrigued by the 'pair' below, which I shot from various angles one morning at dawn.   The on-camera flash on my 30D worked very well at brightening up the cacti against the distant sunlit hills, and graduated neutral-density filters helped subdue what would have been an excessive brightness range.
