Nature photography
by Mark Chappell:   Deep Canyon, Joshua Tree, and the Coachella Valley

The Coachella Valley of southeastern California has Joshua Tree National Park to the north, and the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa mountains to the south. My university runs a research station (Boyd Deep Canyon, not open to the public) in a steep-sided rocky canyon near Palm Desert, on the south side.   The station, with its comfortable but somewhat spartan facilities, is a striking contrast to the rich, expensive developments and lush golf courses of Palm Desert.   I've had the good fortune to do science at Deep Canyon, and these pictures will hopefully give some of the feeling of the place.
