Fulbright Visiting Scholar from Vietnam
Dr. Chau Nguyen graduated from National Hanoi University (1975), with a PhD from the National Center for Sciences and Technology (NCST) of Vietnam (1987), and a MSc of Gent University, Belgium (1996). In Vietnam he is working as Senior Nematologist and Head of the Nematology Department, Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources (IEBR), NCST. With a supporting grant of Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program he has been visiting Jim Baldwins Laboratory for the past eleven months, and will return to Vietnam on December 2, 2003.
During recent months Dr. Nguyen has utilized excellent UCR facilities to complete taxonomic work on materials from Vietnam including pin nematodes (Paratylenchus spp.) with description of three new species, Apratylenchus canophorus gen.n. & sp.n., Bursaphelenchus dalatiensis spec. n. and spiral nematodes (Helicotylenchus spp.) with description of four new species. Currently he is also working on new species of Acrobeles from Vietnam.
Dr. Nguyens primary interest is taxonomy of plant parasitic and entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) in Vietnam. In addition, he has been involve in some other practical aspects of nematology such as integrated management of some important agricultural nematodes (e.g. root-knot nematodes, Meloidogyne spp.) and development of EPN for biological control of insect pests in Vietnam.
Dr. Nguyens Nematology team in Vietnam consists of twelve young staff. Most of these are graduates of the International Nematology Course in Belgium. With this limited staff, his team has been conducting a large number of taxonomy and applied nematology studies ranging from work on plant parasites, free-living terrestrial and aquatic species included marine nematodes.
Current projects underway by his nematology team in Vietnam include:
- Biodiversity of plant and soil nematodes in tropical forest ecosystems of Vietnam. National Fundamental Program in Natural Science (2001-2005).
- Database of taxonomy and systematics of plant parasitic and free-living nematodes in Vietnam. NCST Project (1990-2003).
- Entomopathogenic nematodes and development of EPN biotechnology for biocontrol of insect pests in Vietnam. National Biotechnology Program (2001-2005).
- Impact of Mangrove exploitation on the Benthic ecosystem and the assessment of tools for sustainable management (IMABE). VLIR Cooperative Initiative Program (Belgium).
Dr. Nguyen has published 3 books, 68 original research papers and 15 published contributions to academic conferences.
