An article appeared in The Scientist
(September 30, 1991, page 23) describing Mutant Stock Centers and
sources of insects. Included in these were the mutant colonies of
Dr. Richard W. Beeman in Manhattan, Kansas. Dr. Beeman and his
colleagues have been collaborating to develop the red flour beetle
as an experimental system and he wants to publicize the availability
of their genetic stocks. In addition to mutants of Tribolium
castaneum, the collection includes many lines isolated from the
wild of this and other species of insect pests attacking stored
products. It is housed at the U. S. Grain Marketing Research
Laboratory in Manhattan. Requests should be directed to:
