Iceberg with crabeater seals        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Late one calm spring evening, several of us took a Zodiac boat out to look for some of the banded penguins we were studying at Palmer Station, a research base off the Antarctic Peninsula. We found this small group of crabeater seals lounging in the lee of a large iceberg that was brightly lit by the low sun. In the background is a small island (Cormorant Island, if memory serves) and one of the mountain peaks on Anvers Island (where Palmer is sited).
