Coastal iceplant        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Iceplant (Carpobrotus edulis; formerly Mesembryanthemum) has been used for years to stabilize coastal dunes, as well as freeway edges, etc).   It can be very attractive, but it's also invasive and therefore a threat to native vegetation.   I shot this photo on a stormy winter day in Pacific Grove, California.
