Anasazi dwelling, Mesa Verde        Images © Mark A. Chappell

Mesa Verde National Park contains some of the best-preserved ruins from the Anasazi people (now called the Ancestral Puebloans), who lived in the area until about 700 years ago. They built their homes in the shelter of cliffs, and usually well off the valley floor (this example, 'Square Tower House', is an exception), and judging from many of the ruins they must have been an exceptionally brave people with finely-honed rock climbing skills.
